How to Show the Soundshine Icon in the Dock

Last updated

Soundshine is a menu bar app by design, so it doesn’t show up in the Dock or in Cmd+Tab unless you turn that on. Here’s how, plus a fallback if you’ve lost track of the menu bar icon entirely.

Turn on the Dock icon permanently

  1. Click the Soundshine icon in the menu bar (top right of your screen, near the clock).
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. On the Settings tab, turn on Keep Soundshine in the Dock.

The Dock icon appears right away and Soundshine will keep showing it on every launch from then on. Turn the toggle back off any time to return to menu-bar-only.

Can’t find the menu bar icon?

If the menu bar icon is hidden, hard to spot among other icons, or you’re not sure Soundshine is even running, you can force a Dock icon for one launch without changing any settings:

  1. Open Terminal (search for it in Spotlight with Cmd+Space).

  2. Run:

    open -a Soundshine --args --dock

  3. Soundshine’s icon appears in the Dock. Click it to bring the app forward, open Preferences, and turn on Keep Soundshine in the Dock if you’d like it to stay there going forward.

This one-time launch doesn’t change your saved preference — quit and reopen Soundshine normally afterward and it goes back to menu-bar-only, unless you enabled the setting above.
